Volleyball wins home CAC opener, while field hockey and men's soccer falter on the road.

UMW Volleyball Sweeps St. Mary's in CAC Play

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team swept a Capital Athletic Conference match from St. Mary's College on Wednesday night at Goolrick Gymnasium, improving to 3-0 in CAC play and 10-1 overall. Set scores were 25-17, 28-26, and 25-19.

The Eagles were led offensively by junior hitter Laura Gomez, who scored a team-high 13 kills, while classmate Karissa Herrick added 11 kills. Senior Tola Adebanjo had eight kills and sophomore Kaitlyn Wickersham added seven for UMW. Senior setter Katie Shiflett had 37 assists for the Eagles, and Wickersham led defensively with 16 digs, with Emily Shea adding 14 digs.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they hit the road to play a pair of matches at Lynchburg College.

UMW Field Hockey Falls to Catholic, 2-0

The 11th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team was held scoreless for the first time all season in a 2-0 loss at #12 Catholic University on Wednesday night in Washington, D.C. The Eagles fall to 6-2 on the season.

Catholic scored with 25 minutes left in the first half on a Kim Hermann goal, and added an insurance score five minutes into the second half by Mary Swarthout. In all, the Cardinals held a 13-10 edge in shots, and had nine penalty corners to eight for the Eagles.

Junior goalie Claire Gianelle had six saves in cage for the Eagles, who will return to action on Saturday when they visit York College of Pa. in a Capital Athletic Conference game starting at 1:00 p.m.

Men's Soccer Falls to Gettysburg 2-0

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at Gettysburg College on Wednesday night in Gettysburg to fall to 3-4 on the season.

The Bullets scored once in each half, with one score coming at 5:50, and the other coming at 66:19. Gettysburg led in shots, 15-10, and in corner kicks, 4-2. Blake Weiss had four saves in 75 minutes and Tyler Back added one save in 15 minutes for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they host Stevenson University in Capital Athletic Conference action starting at 2:00 p.m.
