UMW Volleyball Falls to Salisbury in Five Sets

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team dropped a five-set match at Salisbury University on Tuesday night to fall to 12-2 on the season, and 2-1 in CAC play. Set scores were 19-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 15-10.

The Eagles were able to jump ahead by winning the first set, 25-19, and two of the first three sets. Down 10-1 in the fourth set, the Eagles streaked to tie the score at 13, but were edged, 25-22, in the fourth, setting up the pivotal fifth set. UMW fell behind early and couldn't regain the lead in the fifth, falling 15-10 for just their second defeat of the season.

Sophomore Kaitlynn Wickersham scored 18 kills and nine digs to lead Mary Washington, while senior Tola Adebanjo had 12 kills and eight digs, and Laura Gomez had nine kills for UMW. Senior Katie Shiflett had 49 assists and 12 digs for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will host North Carolina Wesleyan College on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.

UMW Women's Soccer Falls to Averett, 3-1

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but fell, 3-1, to Averett University on Tuesday evening at the Battleground. The match was delayed at the outset by 45 minutes due to lightning. The Eagles fall to 6-2-1 on the year.

The Eagles started the scoring at 24:52 when senior Marianne Dubinsky scored unassisted. The Cougars tied the score with 53 seconds left in the half to send the game into intermission tied at one.

Averett took the lead six minutes into the second half, and scored again at the 65 minute mark with an insurance tally. The Cougars led in shots, 14-7, while UMW had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. UMW senior goalkeeper Tina Brehm had seven saves in goal for the Eagles.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m.
