Eagles Blow Past Blazers

UMW Women Encounter little resistance as they move to 12-1 in the CAC

It’s long been said that games aren’t played on paper, and that on any given day a cellar dweller is but all too capable of knocking off a titan. Today wasn’t that day. Both teams played like their record reflected Wednesday night, when the University of Mary Washington Women’s basketball team (17-5, 12-1 CAC) dominated the Hood College Blazers to the tune of 58-21.

The Eagles dominated from the opening tip, as their lead hovered around 20 for most of the first half.  The Mary Washington starting five ran their half-court offense with ease, and Eagles’ head coach Deena Applebury received great production from her bench.

“It was very nice that we were able to get everyone in the game tonight, said Applebury. “Courtney [Overholt] and Kelly [Horvath] both came in and played really well; they’re both freshmen, and tonight both of them scored their first collegiate points.”

After leading by 19, 31-12 at the half, the Eagles didn’t let up. The defensive efforts of senior forward Kate Carlezon, who finished with four steals, helped to create fast-break opportunities, opportunities that the Eagles cashed in on more often than not.

Stretching their lead to 30+ points, Coach Applebury’s squad ate clock with each possession, and final score was 58-21.

On a sober note, junior guard Rachel Martin, arguably the team’s most valuable player, did not play due to an injured knee. The extent of her injury is unknown, and she was scheduled to have an MRI today.

The Eagles will be back in action Saturday, February 2nd, when they host York College at 4 PM.
