Fauquier Plane Crash Pilot Recovering At Hospital

A Broad Run pilot who survived a midair collision with another plane in southern Fauquier County on Memorial Day is recovering at Mary Washington Hospital.

Debbie McInnis, the hospital's director of public relations, said Thomas R. Proven, 70, is in good condition. He has declined requests for interviews, she said. 

, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller. The bodies were transported to the medical examiner's office for identification.

The crash happened at about 4 p.m. Monday. The Piper PA-28 that Proven was piloting is also known as the Cherokee. It is a 140-horsepower, low-wing single-engine plane made in 1965.  It has a non-retractable landing gear, and although it is a slow plane, it is known for its reliability. The right wing of Proven's plane was completely torn off in the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board, FAA and Virginia State Police continue to investigate the two-plane crash.
