Fredericksburg College Student Struck By Faculty Member's Car Dies

Howard University student from Fredericksburg died Monday from injuries he received after being struck by a faculty member's car in D.C.

WASHINGTON, DC — A Howard University student from Fredericksburg died Monday from injuries he received when he was struck by a car driven by a faculty member in Washington, D.C. last week, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

On Thursday, around 3:38 p.m., 18-year-old Mohamed Samura was standing at or near a crosswalk in the vicinity of campus, when he was hit by an Audi sedan, according to police. Samaru was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for serious injuries. He was declared deceased on Monday, after succumbing to his injuries.

"A bright and accomplished member of the Howard University community, Mr. Samura earned selection to the School of Business Dean’s List and demonstrated great skills as a member of the University’s award-winning ESports Team," said Dr. Vinson III in a statement. "The University extends our profound condolences and prayers to his family, friends, classmates and instructors during this difficult time. May they find solace in the cherished moments shared with him. Further, I ask that the privacy of the family be respected and that we keep them in our thoughts and prayers."

Police determined that the Audi was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed on 6th Street, Northwest from Howard Place, Northwest. The car struck a parked vehicle as it continued on 6th Street but then failed to navigate the left turn onto Fairmont Street. That's when the car mounted the curb and struck Samura.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

University officials identified the driver of the Audi as a member of the school's faculty.

On Monday, the President of Howard University Ben Vinson III, shared the following statement:

"It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we share news of the passing of Mohamed Samura, a freshman Computer Information Systems major from Fredericksburg, Va. Mr. Samura was injured during a vehicular accident on Thursday, April 11 at Fairmont and Sixth Streets, NW and died from his injuries late Sunday evening. A bright and accomplished member of the Howard University community, Mr. Samura earned selection to the School of Business Dean's List and demonstrated great skills as a member of the University's award-winning ESports Team.
"The University extends our profound condolences and prayers to his family, friends, classmates and instructors during this difficult time. May they find solace in the cherished moments shared with him. Further, I ask that the privacy of the family be respected and that we keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

"Today, I and the Howard community paid homage to our cherished Bison during a prayer vigil at the Flagpole. We will share more information as soon as possible, following consultation with Mr. Samura's family and friends on future plans to come together to honor his life."
