Durant Takes 28th House District, Scott Wins 88th District Seat

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — In Fredericksburg, Republican Tara Durant defeated incumbent Delegate Joshua Cole in the 28th district, while Republican Phil Scott won the 88th district against Democrat Kecia Evans and Libertarian Tim Scott.

For the Fredericksburg City Council, three seats were contested. In the city's 2nd district, Jon Gerlach and William Reese are running for the seat currently held by William Withers. In the 3rd and 4th district, incumbents Tim Duffy and Charlie Frye faced challenges from Rene Rodriguez and Amber Peebles, respectively.

Only one seat on the city's school board is being contested. In the 3rd district, incumbent Jennifer Boyd faces a challenge from Jesus Dominguez.

In the 28th district race, results show Tara Durant won over incumbent delegate Joshua Cole. She collected 51.03 percent of the votes, or a total of 16,306. Cole received 48.85 percent of the votes, or 15,610.

Republican Phillip Scott won the 88th district race for delegate. Results show Scott winning 58 percent of votes.

Jon Gerlach holds 60 percent of the votes counted so far in the 2nd district city council election, according to unofficial results. So far, three of the district's four precincts have reported results.

In the 3rd district city council election, Tim Duffy has a 30 vote lead with three of the ward's four precincts reporting, according to unofficial results.

In the city's 4th district, Chuck Frye has 65 percent of votes for city council with four out of five precincts reporting unofficial results.

Jennifer Boyd leads the race to represent the city's 3rd district on the school board. Unofficial results show Boyd holds 56 percent of votes with three out of four precincts reporting.

Reproductive rights were just one of the issues that voters considered in Tuesday's elections. James Pryor, a student at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, said concerns about reproductive rights encouraged him and his girlfriend to vote.

"We're both voting because of the abortion laws," Pryor said on Tuesday. "We're afraid they're going to get overturned like they did in Texas."

Angela Soto, a voter from Dale City, shared similar sentiments. "No man should be telling a woman what to do with her body," Soto said. Soto also said she voted for candidates who planned to raise the minimum wage.
