The City of Fredericksburg will be observing Virginia’s newest proposed state holiday, Juneteenth, this Friday, June 19th and City offices will be closed. Governor Northam announced on Tuesday that Juneteenth is being honored this Friday by, in part, declaring a holiday for executive branch employees. It is likely that the General Assembly will soon take up this matter and discuss Juneteenth as a permanent Virginia holiday moving forward. Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery, and commemorates the day it was announced in Galveston, Texas in 1865.
