Fredericksburg’s new Fredericksburg Rappahannock River Heritage Trail won recognition as Best New Facility for populations between 25,000 and 50,000.

The trail connects to “a pre-existing Canal Trail to form a 3.1-mile loop that connects residential neighborhoods with parks, commercial and historic areas of the city,” the Virginia Recreation and Park Society said in a press release.

The new path offers easy access to some of the most beautiful and historic parts of the Rappahannock and its banks, which had been inaccessible due to busy streets and rough terrain before the trail’s completion in 2013, the release said.

Also recognized at the conference was Fredericksburg Parks new Sports Supervisor, Justin Bullock, who won the title of Outstanding New Professional.

Since he joined the staff in 2012, Bullock has showcased diligence, determination, dependability and an immense desire to learn, the press release said. He was an asset to the parks when the sports superintendent position was vacant and stepped in to train the new superintendent when the position was filled.
