Fredericksburg Police, Fire Chiefs To Leave In Early 2020: Report

The city will be searching for replacements to fill its top two public safety positions.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Fredericksburg's police and fire chiefs notified the city they plan to leave their posts in early 2020, decisions that will put the city in a situation where it will need to conduct searches simultaneously to fill both positions. Police Chief David Nye will leave his position on Jan. 24 and Fire Chief Edwin Allen Jr. announced plans to retire from the department on March 27, the Free Lance-Star reported Thursday.

Nye took over as Fredericksburg Police Chief in January 2005 after working for the Alexandria police department for 24 years. He has accepted a support position with the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office. Capt. Brian Layton of the police department's patrol division will serve as interim chief after Nye's departure.

Allen has served as the city’s fire chief for 16 years. The city has not named a successor, according to the Free Lance-Star.
