Fredericksburg Police Nab Homicide Suspect
Manhunt in city included lockdown at high school.

Fredericksburg police apprehended a suspect in a homicide Friday after a citywide manhunt and alerts to the public.
The suspect, Steven Vander Briel, was taken into custody in the 500 block of Riverside Drive at approximately 5:30 p.m., according to police. He was being transported to Police Headquarters for questioning.

The police began searching for Briel after a female was found unconscious at her home around 3 p.m. in the 1900 block of Washington Avenue. The young woman later died after being transported to the hospital, police said.
The police said that Briel fled the scene on foot before they arrived. They described him as between 29 and 30 years old, and last seen wearing a white shirt and jeans, “5 o’clock shadow” on his face.

James Monroe High School was placed on lockdown, and there was a heavy police presence in the area.
