FREDERICKSBURG, VA — ALCOVA Mortgage LLC named Austin Guay, a Marine Corps veteran and Fredericksburg police officer, a 2020 Hometown Hero. Kimberly Thagholm, a loan officer with ALCOVA Mortgage, nominated Guay for the honor.

Guay received a plaque and a $500 check from ALCOVA Mortgage for getting selected as a Hometown Hero. Since 2014, ALCOVA Mortgage has recognized military veterans across its service area through its Hometown Hero program.

Guay joined the Marine Corps in 2010 and was honorably discharged in 2014. After living in the United Kingdom for two years, he moved back to the Fredericksburg area. In 2018, Guay joined the Fredericksburg Police Department as a police officer.

“He is a very down-to-earth, unassuming hero that has served his country and community,” Thagholm said in a statement. “He is quick to speak of his fellow officers and social workers and their hero roles everyday yet dismisses his own contribution.”

Guay currently works as a patrol officer on the night shift in Fredericksburg. He chose a career path as a police officer because he wanted to bring home his “boots on the ground” experience to serve his community, ALCOVA Mortgage said in a July 1 news release.

Thagholm, who works in the mortgage company's Locust Grove branch, presented the Hometown Hero award to Guay and his family. Jeff Edmisten, a friend and Marine veteran, joined Thagholm at the presentation.
