Fredericksburg’s Via Colori Festival Kicks Off This Weekend

This weekend, the streets of downtown will come alive with color at this year's Via Colori Festival. Artists from around the area will create masterpieces directly on the streets of the historic district over a two day period, using a special kind of pastel chalk.

Street painting is a centuries-old Italian tradition, where large scale pieces of art come together directly on the pavement. This year, Michael Kirby holds the honor of featured artist. Kirby is known for his 3D street art, and plans on painting a large 3D piece for the crowds at this year’s festival.

Local artist, Carol Iglesias is this year’s signature artist, and is known for her paintings of European buildings and waterways. She will create a large scale version of her work on the street during the festival. Using an 8 by 10 foot frame, Iglesias will transfer her knowledge of colors and pastels to create a visually stimulating piece.

Over 75 artists have volunteered their skills for this year’s Festival. Both Sophia and Charlotte Streets of downtown Fredericksburg will be closed down for the event.

“We have a great group of local artists who provide a diverse range of styles and approaches to Via Colori,” said Artist Chair, Nicholas Candela.  

The public is encouraged to experience the process of the work of the artists.

“It’s very rewarding to get feedback from the public, and it’s sometimes surprising to see what people observe when they watch you work,” Iglesias said.

Since the street paintings will only exist on the pavement for a weekend, it’s important to appreciate the process and creation of the art piece. It’s a great opportunity to see an artist’s work from beginning to end.

The Via Colori Festival will be held this Saturday and Sunday, September 22-23 from 10 a.m.  – 5 p.m. Vendors, entertainment and more will be provided throughout the whole event.
