Friday Night Lights: James Monroe Football Preview
With the season less than two weeks away, Patch takes a look at JM's prospects this season.
It's finally that wonderful time of the year again: shoulder pads, screaming fans, and sultry summer nights filled with the aromas of perspiration and wet grass. In Virginia, we love our high school football, and the City of Fredericksburg is no exception.
It's been almost four years since JM's 2008 state championship campaign, but that legacy follows the squad around the field during two-a-days, film sessions, and carries them through that final windsprint.
Last season, JM went 9-3 with an 8-2 record and co-championship in the AA Battlefield District. The Yellow Jackets' playoff aspirations ended with a heartbreaking loss to Poquoson in the Region I championship game.

With five starters back on offense and four returning on defense, expectations are high, according to head coach Richard Serbay.
"I believe if the lines come together we can compete with anyone and earn a playoff spot," said Serbay.

It won't be an easy road, however. The Yellow Jackets will face two group AAA opponents (Stafford and Freedom) before opening district play at home against Eastern View on Sept. 23rd. The key according to Serbay, is not to look ahead.
"The biggest game on the schedule is always the next one we play," said the coach.
Asked who may be primed for a big year in 2011, Serbay remarked, "I think Ethan Preston will have a break out season at running back."
While there may be new faces on both sides of the ball, there will be no question about the man under center. "DeMontaz Brown is our QB," said Serbay. "He threw for 856 yards in 8 games last season and has excellent potential!"
JM runs a version of the spread, ensuring that fans will be treated to a display of athleticism and pure team speed. To explain the spread in brief, it is an offensive philosophy that consists of using multiple (often 3 or 4) wide receivers and having the quarterback work out of the shotgun. The principal strategy is to spread out the defense and hope that your team's athletes can beat the opponent's.
