High-Speed Chase Ends With Whimper in Stafford: Police

After crashing car and fleeing, suspect returns to scene and turns himself in, according to Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

STAFFORD, VA — A Stafford man who led police on a high speed chase, crashed his vehicle, fled and then returned to the scene with a family member to turn himself in was arrested early Wednesday morning, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

Clayton Lee Grayson, 22, of Knollwood Court in Stafford, was charged with felony eluding of police,
receipt of a stolen firearm, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana and failure to obey traffic lights.

Around 12:45 a.m., police saw a vehicle run a red light while turning left onto southbound Mine Road. Police tried to pull over the silver Chevrolet Impla but it accelerated.

Police followed it a through the Walmart Parking Lot at 217 Garrisonville Road and back onto Mine Road as it hit speeds approaching 80 mph. As the driver approached Highpoint Boulevard, police say, he crashed into a small retaining wall near the Goddard School Sign, hopped out of the car and fled into nearby thick brush.

As a K-9 unit soon began to search for the suspect, he returned and identified himself. Police say a family member had advised him to return to the scene and face the consequences.

When the vehicle was searched, police found a .22 caliber handgun which later was identified as stolen. Other items found included marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
