Holiday Giving: 4 Charities Fredericksburg Patch Readers Love
Charities that show their Christmas spirit year-round.

Caroling, building snowmen, opening piles of presents, roasting chestnuts over an open fire. Any of these things should bring images of Christmas into your mind, but the words “giving back” typically don’t get the same reaction.
But giving back is exactly what charities around Fredericksburg do all year.
Last week Patch asked you to shout out your favorite Fredericksburg charities on Facebook and the four charities posted are a great representation of the work happening around Fredericksburg year-round, but especially during the holidays:

Just a Hand: Started during the Christmas season, Just a Hand is a charity run by a Fredericksburg woman who people call “Aunt Lynn.” Lynn started collecting clothing for less fortunate people after seeing a craigslist ad from a family in need. Just a Hand started small to help that family, but has grown to include 4 drop-off locations for donated clothing, toys, strollers, books and household items.
The Fairy Godmother Project: The Fairy Godmother Project started in 2011 after Director Andie McConnell heard stories from several friends about their child’s struggle with pediatric cancer. McConnell felt compelled by these stories to help families who had a child suffering from cancer. The Fairy Godmother Project hosts events to fundraise for these families and “ease the burden of everyday life.”
Mean Mommy Club: The Mean Mommy Club of Fredericksburg is a non-profit and mother support group for women who “like drinking, cussing, eating bacon, complaining, winning the innernets, [and] being loud.” Once a year the group hosts the Fredericksburg Zombie Walk which raises money for local charities.
Feed Fred: Feed Fred does just what the name says: they feed people in need in Fredericksburg. But along with full meals the charity also provides employment skills for the homeless and unemployed.
