How to Support Schools in Your Local Area

You've likely noticed that your local schools could use extra help these days. Between reduced funding and increased demands (not to mention complications stemming from world events), things have gotten more challenging for school systems and teachers.

Given how much help our schools need, you may feel powerless to do anything. It's helpful to remember that even the smallest action makes a difference, so don't be afraid to try. Here are some ways to can help support schools in your area.

Donate Supplies

One of the easiest ways to help your local school is by donating supplies. Nearly every classroom needs basic supplies such as pencils, pens, paper, and notebooks. Most schools also need other items like computer monitors and essential tech supplies.

If you have some spare funds to buy these supplies (or have gently used supplies, in the case of larger needed items), please feel free to reach out to your local school and donate these items. Pay attention to local supply drives, as these are becoming more common. If you spot one, make a point of supporting them by donating the requested supplies.

Alternatively, you can look for organizations collecting donations on behalf of needy schools. Look for organizations like Chicago Children's Advocacy Center, which runs a Back to School Backpack Drive.

Nominate for Grants

Did you know that you can nominate your local schools for grants? Specialized grants are available, including America's Farmers Grow Rural Education programs. By nominating your school for these grants, you increase the odds of them getting additional funding.

Volunteer

There are a ton of ways to donate your time to a school. You can join the PTA, assist in any of the drives mentioned above, or find something else to utilize your particular skill set. Reach out to the school to see how you can help. If this isn't possible, approach the PTA to see if they have any ideas.

Attend Meetings

One of the best ways to help your local school is by ensuring that your voice is heard. Attend school board meetings, listen, and share your thoughts. These meetings often happen weekly or monthly, so be prepared to dedicate time to stay updated on these matters.
