International Ska Festival This Weekend In Fredericksburg

What's billed as America's biggest ska party is this weekend at the Fredericksburg Fairgrounds: The Supernova International Ska Festival.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Summon your inner "ska" this weekend at the Fredericksburg Fairgrounds, 2400 Airport Lane, and prepare to dance, groove or just hang out. We're talking about the 2017 SuperNova International Ska Festival, noon-11:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

More than 30 ska bands will be hand, and not just from the United States. Other performers will hail from Jamaica, the United Kingdom and Canada. Ska music more or less blends Jamaica reggae with facets of rock, punk and jazz. Remember the English Beat or General Public? That's ska music, and it was and remains an ever-evolving genre.

Bands will include Jamaican ska legend Derrick Morgan, The Aggrolites from Los Angeles, The Skints from London and ska and soul masters The Pietasters from Washington, DC. "That would be a world-class line-up by itself," organizers say, but the festival also features The Toasters, Pilfers, Chris Murray, Symarip backed up by The Bishops, the whirlwind known as Askultura, Eastern Standard Time, The Snails, Richmond's own Murphy's Kids and many more.

No food or beverage may be brought into the fairgrounds, but there will be plenty of vendors with an eclectic array of food, as well as beer. It's a rain-or-shine event, so if you have to, just think "Woodstock." It's an all-ages festival, and children under 10 get in free.
