Jackets Set for Biggest Game to Date

The Yellow Jackets will put 7-0 on the line in what might be the final roadblock to an undefeated regular season.

Two schools boast still-undefeated records in the Battlefield District, and they will clash Friday night at Maury Stadium. One of course, is James Monroe. The other is 4-2 Courtland High School, one of the Yellow Jackets' fiercest rivals.

The Cougars faltered early on in non-district play, falling to AAA Massaponax 29-6, and Louisa County 32-13. But since their Sept. 9 loss to the Lions, Courtland has played near-perfect football, reeling off four straight victories over Battlefield district opponents.

As if the matchup needed any more billing, Friday is homecoming night for the Jackets. Expect an intense game with early penalties as both sides might charge out the gates with a bit too much emotion. Speed is the Jackets' biggest asset, and expect Coach Serbay to exploit this advantage on both sides of the ball. Look for the offense to find ways to get Kasine Conway and A'Darius Brown the ball in space. When those two track stars find a seam, it's usually a reservation for six.

Bottom Line:

  • James Monroe wins this game nine times out of ten. The one time it loses is a doomsday scenario where the Jackets find themselves turning the ball over again and again.
  • With only three games remaining on the regular season docket, the Jackets will likely go undefeated provided they can get by Courtland Friday.
  • While Friday may be James Monroe's biggest test to date, it may just be more of the same. If "Big Game" Ethan Preston (21 TDs) gets going early, JM might be able to play from ahead.
  • Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
