Missing Stafford Man Found Dead, Police Confirm

David Hartnett, a Stafford man who had been missing for just over a month, was found dead, authorities said on Monday.

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — David Hartnett, a missing Stafford County man, was found dead, authorities announced on Monday.

Hartnett, a 57-year-old, had been missing since April 20. The sheriff's office did not provide any details about what could have caused Hartnett's death or where he was found.

"David Hartnett has been found deceased," the Stafford County Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook. "The investigation is ongoing. Our hearts and prayers go out to the victim's family during this difficult time."

The sheriff's office had deployed several resources in an attempt to find Hartnett since he went missing last month. Authorities searched the Rappahannock River, deployed police dogs and drones, and combed through local surveillance footage.

On Facebook, a family member said they still did not know when or how Hartnett died. Hartnett's sister wrote said a family member found human remains while searching for him on May 13.

"It has taken until today to confirm that they [the remains] were David's," Hartnett's sister Kelly wrote. "I am sure you all have questions, we still have many questions too. But what we don't have right now is answers."
