FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Speed limits in downtown Fredericksburg are set to decrease on July 1. In several downtown areas, the speed limit will drop from 25 miles per hour to 20 mile per hour.
City officials said the change was spurred by a desire to increase pedestrian and cyclist safety in the area. The affected regions experience heavy foot traffic throughout the year.

The change was approved by the Fredericksburg City Council in May. City officials said the reduced speed limits are the latest pedestrian safety effort in the central business district, in addition to traffic signalization, crosswalk bollards, traffic-calming installations, traffic enforcement and new bike racks.
The speed limit ordinance was approved by a unanimous vote. More details about the change are available on the city's website.
