Next 2 Chances For Snow: Northern Virginia Weather

STERLING, VA — Northern Virginia's final "work week" of the year, as it were, finds a weather forecast calling for extreme cold and two slight chances of potential snow, according to the area arm of the National Weather Service in Sterling. Best bets for a few flakes will be Tuesday night into the first part of Wednesday, and then again Friday night.

And about that cold? Well, consider this from the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang: "This week could well turn out to be the coldest in Washington in two winters — since Jan. 17 to 24, 2016, when the big blizzard occurred."

Even so, expect to see plenty of sunshine for much of the week but that won't do much to make things feel warmer. But at least the wind will diminish following Monday night's low of around 24 and winds gusts of up to 30 mph or so. Here's the detailed forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 24. West wind 6 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 36. West wind around 6 mph.

Tuesday Night: A slight chance of snow showers after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 24. Light north wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday: A slight chance of snow showers before noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 31. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 17. North wind 8 to 11 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 27.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 21.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 32.

Friday Night: A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 33.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 19.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 30.

Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22.

New Year's Day: Partly sunny, with a high near 29.
