Northern Virginia Weather: Dog Days Arrive

STERLING, VA—So was this past weekend the opening ceremony for the dog days of August? Looks that way, and Northern Virginia's work-week weather forecast should continue to offer proof for the next couple of days. That's the word from the National Weather Service and other area forecasting outlets.

We're looking at something of a rinse-and-repeat work week, with the hottest stuff here for the first part. Then, as is pointed out by the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang: "During the transition from hot to not as hot, some showers and storms are a good bet midweek."

So there you go. Here's the detailed forecast from the National Weather Service's area arm in Sterling:

Monday: Isolated showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 92. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Monday night: Isolated showers and thunderstorms before 11pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 73. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Tuesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 91. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight, then a slight chance of showers between midnight and 3am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 75. South wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms between noon and 3pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 90. West wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Wednesday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before midnight, then a slight chance of showers between midnight and 3am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Thursday: A chance of thunderstorms before 8am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 8am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 87. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
