One Dead in Wreck on Blue and Gray Parkway

Fatal crash early Tuesday, according to Fredericksburg City Police.

One driver was killed and a second driver was injured in a wreck early Tuesday in Fredericksburg, according to city police.

George Melvin Downes, 79, of Stafford, was pronounced dead at approximately 3:40 a.m. at Mary Washington Hospital. The other driver is stable and does not have any life-threatening injuries, according to police.

At 3:30 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Blue and Gray Parkway and Lafayette Boulevard.

According to police, Downes was driving a Toyota Tacoma. A witness told police that the Tacoma attempted to turn left while oncoming traffic had the green light.

A box truck legally traveling through the intersection struck the Tacoma, according to police.
