Pedestrian Hit By Car, Dies While Crossing Street In Fair Lakes

The 33-year-old Fairfax man's death is the sixth pedestrian fatality in Fairfax County to date in 2020, the police said.​

FAIRFAX, VA — A pedestrian died Thursday night after getting hit by car as he was crossing Monument Drive near Monument Court in the Fair Lakes area of Fairfax County, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. Leonard Mathey Jr., 33, of Fairfax, was hit by a 2008 Hyundai Elantra that was traveling westbound on Monument Drive.

Detectives from the Fairfax County Police Department's Crash Reconstruction Unit have preliminarily determined Mathey was not in a crosswalk when he was hit by the car around 8:50 p.m. Thursday night. He was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries. Mathey's death is the sixth pedestrian fatality in Fairfax County to date in 2020, the police said.

The driver of the Hyundai Elantra remained on the scene and is cooperating with detectives. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors for the driver, the police said. Detectives have not yet determined if alcohol was a factor for the pedestrian, the police added.
