Around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, authorities with the Fredericksburg Police Department asked Stafford deputies to be on the lookout for Ellis, who was driving a grey Acura. Authorities believed Ellis was armed and intoxicated, according to the police report.
A pair of deputies saw Ellis in the car on northbound U.S. 1. The deputies said they saw "indicators for intoxicated driving" and noticed that Ellis had his phone in his hand and no seat belt, the sheriff's office claimed.

The deputies said they tried to stop Ellis, but he made a u-turn onto southbound U.S. 1 and reached speeds of 80 miles per hour. The deputies started to chase him, police said.
"He passed several cars by travelling over the double yellow line in a pursuit that lasted approximately one minute and went eight tenths of a mile," the Stafford County Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook. "As Ellis neared the jail, he lost control and swerved into a southbound SUV, causing the SUV to flip several times and land on its roof in the southbound lanes."
After hitting the SUV, Ellis crashed into a ditch, according to the police report. After the crash, deputies were able to take Ellis into custody.
