Police Fatally Shoot Armed Man In Stafford Co.: Sheriff

The man brandished a rifle toward deputies and repeatedly refused orders to drop the weapon, authorities said.

NORTH STAFFORD, VA — Police fatally shot an armed man Saturday in North Stafford, authorities said.

Deputies responded to a disturbance at 12:20 a.m. in the 2400 block of Richmond Highway, officials said. As deputies reached the complainant, a resident of the home brandished a rifle toward law enforcement, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies repeatedly ordered him to drop the rifle, but he failed to comply, officials said. The deputies then fired their weapons, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff's office said.

Officials haven't disclosed the identities of the decedent or officers.

Nobody else was injured. Southbound Richmond Highway was closed Saturday morning for the investigation.

The deputies were placed on "routine administrative leave," the sheriff's office said. Authorities plan to release more information as it becomes available.
