Police: Locker Break-Ins at Two Area Gyms

Incidents during the same time period Monday night, according to Fredericksburg City Police.

Employees at two popular Fredericksburg gyms reported locker break-ins Monday night, according to the Fredericksburg City Police.

At Gold’s Gym on Plank Road, an employee reported locks were broken on three lockers, with wallets and other belongings stolen. The incidents occurred between 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m., according to police.

Employees at Planet Fitness on Jefferson Davis Highway reported a similar incident between 6:45 p.m. and 8 p.m. In that case, three lockers were broken into with wallets stolen. One of the victim’s car keys were also stolen and used to gain access to the vehicle, according to police.

In a 2011 article, Washington Post columnist Vicky Hallett offered ways to keep your stuff safe at the gym, including:

  • Leave your wallet and cellphone in your car, secured in the trunk.
  • Choose lockers near the end of the row, because they can be seen by more people and are less likely to be tampered with.
  • If you use your own lock to secure your property, don’t make it a cheap one (i.e., don’t use a $5 lock for a $300 phone).
