Police Looking for Purse Snatcher Who Got Away

He made daylight theft Monday from UMW student, then jumped into car, say Fredericksburg police.

Fredericksburg police are looking for the man who snatched a purse from a University of Mary Washington (UMW) student on Monday afternoon as she was walking along College Avenue.

The suspect is described as a white man in his late 20s, tall and skinny, and wearing plaid shorts, a red and black ball cap, and glasses.

The incident happened at about 1:40 p.m., according to a police report. The student told police that she was walking on the sidewalk in the 1700 block of College Avenue, in the direction of William Street, when the man approached her from behind and grabbed her purse from her shoulder.

The man then took off running, and another witness told police that he saw the suspect get into a black automobile to flee the scene. The victim was not injured.

The police officer who investigated the robbery later found the stolen purse in the 1800 block of Augustine Avenue.
