STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — Three people were hospitalized on Sunday night after they were seriously injured in a car crash in Stafford County, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office. Authorities said the crash occurred when a man fleeing police ran a red light.

The police chase began around 9 p.m. on Sunday, the sheriff's office said. Deputies said they attempted to stop a gray Toyota Corolla that was driving recklessly on Mine Road near Garrisonville Road.

"The vehicle was travelling 70 miles per hour in a posted 35 miles per hour zone," Major Shawn Kimmitz of the Stafford County Sheriff's Office said in an update posted to Facebook. "Deputies suspect the driver was driving intoxicated."

The vehicle ran a red light near the Wawa on Butler Road, police said. The fleeing vehicle hit another car that was turning left left from Chatham Heights onto Butler Road, authorities said.

The vehicle was struck on the driver's side. The driver and the passenger of the vehicle that was struck were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, Kimmitz said.

The driver of the fleeing vehicle was also hospitalized with serious injuries, police said. The sheriff's office did not specify whether any of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

The sheriff's office did not release the name of the suspect or any charges on Sunday night.

The intersection of Chatham Heights Road and Butler Road was shut down for several hours on Sunday night as authorities investigated the crash and created a reconstruction of events.
