Raymond Charles McAfoose, 72, of Fredericksburg died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015 at his home, surrounded by his family, after living with throat cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Ray was born on September 2, 1943 in Natrona Heights, PA. He received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Kent State University and his masters of science in Public Health, with a concentration in Health Care Administration, from the University of Missouri. He served on active duty for three years in the United States Air Force Medical Service Corps during the Vietnam War.

Ray was President and CEO of the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston for close to 20 years. Prior to his retirement, he and his wife co-founded Bridges to Health, an outpatient holistic integrative health care center in Durham, NC.

Ray was an active member of the Rappahannock Rotary Club. He led the Rotary/Safe Blood project in Chile, S. A. to involve Chilean Rotarians in improving the quality & quantity of donated blood by being blood donor role models. He served on the Board of Directors of Mary Washington Hospital and the Alzheimer’s Association.

Ray will be remembered for dedication to family and community, his positive attitude and infectious smile.

Survivors include his wife and best friend, Elizabeth Hood McAfoose. They each brought three children to the marriage and ten grandchildren. Grandpap and Grammyfoose enjoyed their grandchildren. Their children include, Heather McAfoose and son Vincent of Warwick, RI; Stephanie Morrison (Kenneth) and daughter Zoe of Warwick, RI; Megan Smith (Timothy) and children Jacen and Taylor of Acton, MA; David Wilson (Frances Dattilo) and sons Carlos and Pablo of Arlington; Riva Wilson of Rockport, MA; and Carolyn Miller (James) and sons Andrew, Matthew, Benjamin and Christopher of Orange; sisters Doris Collins (James), Kathleen Jonczak (Chester) of Natrona Heights, PA and sister-in-law Emily C. Hood of Boston, MA

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1 at Covenant Funeral Service, 4801 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, VA.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2 at The Presbyterian Church of Fredericksburg, 810 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, VA. A reception will follow.
