Record Freshman Class at University of Mary Washington

Get ready for a lot of fresh faces in Fredericksburg with UMW's largest first-year class in its 107 years.

The University of Mary Washington opened its new University Center just in time — with a record number of first-year students getting settled in on campus this weekend.

Residence halls opened on Thursday, with 1,001 freshmen expected to begin classes on Monday. The school will also be welcoming 370 transfer students.

“I am thrilled that so many outstanding students have selected the University of Mary Washington as their academic home,” said

Kimberley Buster-Williams, associate provost for enrollment management, says the interest from students looks like it’ll be continuing into 2016.

“We have already seen an increase in applications from students interested in our new early decision program and test optional program, respectively,” she said.

This year, UMW debuts a comprehensive freshman program that features first-year seminars on more than 60 topics, residential clustering, comprehensive advising and the university’s second-ever common book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
