Fatal Plane Crash: 6 Dead After Plane Misses Landing at Shannon Airport

Plane struck tree line past runway and caught fire, according to Virginia State Police. Medical Examiner to account for how many on board.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Six people died in a small plane crash Friday afternoon near Shannon Airport in Spotsylvania, according to the Virginia State Police.

Police had initially noted "at least" 2 confirmed deaths while working with the medical examiner to determine the exact number on the plane.

Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller noted late Friday that all six were from out of state. Identities will not be released until next of kin are notified.

At 12:26 p.m., first responders received a call of a plane crash near the airport off Tidewater Trail.

The small, private aircraft was attempting to land at the airport when it came to the end of the runway and pulled back up, according to Geller.

"The plane made it beyond the railroad tracks at the end of the airport property, banked left and struck a tree line," she said in a statement. "The plane crashed in the trees and immediately caught fire."
