Rescue on the Ice at Aquia Creek

64-year-old Stafford man was pulled from the ice Tuesday, according to Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

A Stafford detective saved a man who had fallen into the ice on Aquia Creek Tuesday morning, according to Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

Local rivers and lakes are not safe when iced over. In this case, the man’s dog had run onto the ice and he was trying to save the dog when he fell in.

The 64-year-old victim was 50 feet out into the ice in the 800 block of Hope Road. His son contacted 911.

Detective Tim Covington was in the area and arrived to find the man was holding onto a canoe that his son had pushed out onto the ice to keep him from going under.

Covington ran out onto the ice and pulled the man out of the water, assisting him to the shore.

The detective rendered aid as the victim went into shock until Stafford Fire and Rescue arrived. The victim’s condition is not known.

The son recovered the dog, which was not injured.
