Soap Box Derby Saturday In Fredericksburg

The 21st annual Rappahannock Regional Soap Box Derby will be held Saturday at William Street Hill in Fredericksburg. It's a free event.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Real racing of the soap box variety will on full display Saturday at William Street Hill. It's the 21st annual Rappahannock Regional Soap Box Derby. And it's also quite the spectacle to behold.

The event begins at 8 a.m. with opening ceremonies and continues throughout the day. The racers range in age from 8-20. It's free, and those who attend are encouraged to bring chairs and shade umbrellas. Numerous vendors will be on hand.

  • 7:30 a.m. — Racers assemble
  • 8 a.m. — Opening ceremonies
  • 8:15 a.m. — Parade of drivers up the hill
  • 8:20 a.m. — Oil Can Race
  • 8:30 a.m. — Showcase of last year's champions
  • 8:45 a.m. — Aerial race photo
  • 9 a.m. — Races begin

The following streets will be closed 5 a.m.-4 p.m. for the derby: the 700-1100 blocks of William Street, and the 900-1000 blocks of Sunken Road, Littlepage Street and Kenmore Avenue.
