SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA — After passing on a similar proposal last year, the Spotsylvania County Board of Directors is reconsidering the possibility of outfitting county school buses with cameras meant to track down motorists who illegally pass the buses. Though a date has not been set, the board voted last week to hear the proposal, according to a report.

If the cameras are approved, footage would be used to identify drivers who pass school buses stopped with flashing red lights and the stop arm extended, the Free Lance-Star reported. The school system would not be responsible for the cost of camera installation or the work done by the vendor hired to operate them. Instead, the vendor would collect a percentage of the fines paid, with the remainder going to the school system.

School transportation officials said they saw more than 140 violations in 2017. In considering the proposal, supervisors cited the desire to keep students safe.
