Spotsylvania Man Charged In 4th Of July Shooting Of 2 Brothers

A Spotsylvania man has been charged with two counts of malicious wounding in connection with a fatal shooting on July 4, police said.

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA — A Spotsylvania man has been arrested and charged preliminarily with two counts of malicious wounding in connection with the death of two brothers on the 4th of July, according to the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office. The incident appeared to be related to road rage, the sheriff's office said.

The Spotsylvania emergency communications center received a 911 call at 10:15 p.m. Saturday. When Spotsylvania deputies arrived in the area of Fox Run Drive, they found two men dead in a vehicle in the middle of the road. The victims were brothers Fred Swick, 39, and Joe Swick, 38, both of Spotsylvania, the sheriff's office said. Danny Lee Huffman, 48, of Spotsylvania, has been charged in the case.

Huffman was in a car with his 17-year-old son during the incident and was the person who called 911, the sheriff's office said. Huffman told sheriff's deputies that he was cut on his arm during a fight with the two brothers.

The sheriff's office said the weapon used was found in a pond on Huffman's property by divers with the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office.

Huffman and the Swick brothers did not know each other and had no prior history, the sheriff's office said.

Huffman has been charged preliminarily with two counts of malicious wounding, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony and felony child endangerment. The charges will likely be upgraded in the coming days, the sheriff's office said. He is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail on no bond.
