Stafford DMV Select Switches To Appointment-Only

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles is not making it easy to renew a driver's license or transfer ownership on a car title as deadline extensions put in place due to the coronavirus begin to expire. Residents often have to wait a month or two to get an appointment to conduct business that requires the driver or vehicle owner to show up in person.

In Stafford County, things just got worse for residents when the county decided to make its DMV Select appointment-only. With the Garrisonville full-service DMV completely closed, the DMV Select on Courthouse Road has seen its volume of customers increase to a level it can no longer handle, according to Stafford County Treasurer Laura Rudy.

"I am very proud of my staff for the service they have provided to fill the void, but we think it is best now to join other DMVs in requiring appointments for all transactions," Rudy said in a statement.

Starting Monday, Stafford’s DMV Select in the Treasurer’s Office is open only by appointment due to the huge demand for its services. Appointments can be made by visiting the Stafford County website.

Residents with driver's licenses that expired on July 31 or before have until Oct. 31, or just over two months from now, to renew their licenses. People with a driver's license that expires in August and beyond have not been offered any extensions despite the restrictions and slowdown in service at the DMV.

Vehicle titles, registrations and other services are available at the Stafford branch. A list of transactions the branch provides is available at the DMV Select Services link of the staffordcountyva.gov website. The branch cannot issue or renew driver’s licenses or identification cards.

Stafford’s DMV Select is open by appointment from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
