STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — Deputies with the Stafford County Sheriff's Office arrested a suspect wanted in connection with two recent home burglaries, in addition to cigarette theft from a local Wawa. William Pitts, 35, of Fredericksburg, is now facing a multitude of charges following the burglaries, officials say.

On Sept. 20, a Stafford County deputy responded to a report of breaking and entering at a residence on the 100 block of Madison Avenue. Upon arrival, the resident explained that he returned home to find a door ajar and numerous items — including computers, an iPad, exercise equipment and a coffeemaker — were stolen from his home.

Later that day shortly before 9 p.m., the deputy returned to the same residence after the victim seeing some of his stolen property in the backyard of a nearby residence. The deputy then made contact with Pitts, who was unloading items from a vehicle, in front of the house, officials say.

According to the Sheriff's Office report, the deputy immediately recognized Pitts as the suspect behind a cigarette theft that occurred earlier that day at the Wawa located at 275 Butler Rd. The deputy observed Pitts, who was unsteady on his feet, had pinpoint pupils and slurred speech, according to the report. The deputy then took Pitts into custody for public intoxication.

After arresting Pitts, the deputy learned Pitts also had a Fredericksburg City drug-related warrant out for his arrest. Upon searching Pitts' vehicle, the deputy found numerous pieces of jewelry and controlled substances, as well as the cigarettes stolen from Wawa. The deputy also made contact with the registered owner of the vehicle, and learned it also was stolen from the owner's family member's residence on the 500 block of Cumberland Road, the report says.

Deputies then did a sweep of the Cumberland Road residence and found signs of breaking and entering. Pitts had taken keys to the homeowner's moped as well, the report says, and the homeowner was able to locate several stolen items in the car Pitts was driving, including an iPad, jewelry, a tool box, and a package of brownies.

Pitts currently is being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. He faces charges of breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony, larceny with intent to sell or distribute, grand larceny, attempted grand larceny, tampering with a vehicle, driving revoked, possession of controlled substances, and dispensing drugs in violation of drug act.
