Police Chase After Woman Fatally Shot Ends In I-95 Crash

UPDATE: A man shot and killed a woman in Stafford, fired a pursuing officers and then crashed on I-95 in Stafford, according to police.

STAFFORD, VA — A man shot and killed a woman Thursday in the area of Heron Drive and then led police on an Interstate 95 chase. During the chase he shot at Virginia State Police and Stafford County officers — none were hit — and crashed in Stafford County. He was transported to an area hospital. The woman's identity has not yet been released.

Around 11:30 a.m., after the woman was shot, the state police received a bulletin from Stafford police to be on the lookout for a black Ford Explorer headed north on I-95. When police spotted it and gave chase at the 136 mile marker, the driver didn't stop until the 138 mile marker.

That's when he stopped in the center lane, leaned out of his window and fired several rounds at the trooper. One penetrated the windshield but the officer wasn't hit. Then, around the 140 mile marker, the truck slowed down and the driver again began firing at the pursuing cops. This time, a Stafford police car was hit but the officer only suffered minor injuries.

The suspect continued weaving in and out of traffic before side-swiping a vehicle at the 142 mile marker. He then lost control, ran off the right side of the road, hit a guardrail and then flipped the truck, which landed on its roof.
