Sticker Shock in Spotsylvania Over New Animal Shelter: Media Report

The Sheriff's Office favors the facility, but one county official calls it a "Taj Mahal."

As a fast-growing area, Spotsylvania County has outgrown its animal shelter, which was built just 15 years ago.

But a proposal to build a new $4 million “no-kill” shelter has drawn fire from county leaders, who say it would be too expensive, WJLA-TV Channel 7 reported recently. The shelter, which would meet Humane Society guidelines, would cost nearly five times as much as Spotsylvania’s current shelter.

The county sheriff’s office favors the new shelter, but a county official told Channel 7 it would be unfair to taxpayers, calling it “the Taj Mahal of animal shelters.”

A site for the new shelter has yet to be determined, Channel 7 reported.
