Student Brought Loaded Gun To Middle School In Spotsylvania: Police

A Chancellor Middle School student will face criminal charges after bringing a loaded .45 caliber handgun to class on Friday, police said.

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA — A student brought a loaded handgun to Chancellor Middle School in Spotsylvania County on Friday morning, the sheriff's office said.

No students were injured, and authorities said the handgun was not used to threaten any students or staff members.

Authorities have not identified the student by age, name, or gender. The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office said the student was taken into custody will face criminal charges when deputies complete their investigation.

A student at Chancellor Middle School told a teacher that they saw another student with a handgun, and that the bag was inside the other student's bag, police said. The teacher notified administrators and a school resource officer.

Authorities found loaded .45 caliber handgun in the student's bag.

"At no time was the gun showed in a way to threaten students, faculty, staff, or threaten the safety of the school," the sheriff's office wrote in a report on Friday afternoon. "The joint efforts of the student, teacher, school administration, and school resource officer should be commended for their quick actions during today’s incident."
