Suspect Steals Big-Money Check From Mailbox In Stafford

A man is wanted for stealing outgoing mail containing a check for more than $50,000, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

STAFFORD, VA — Police are looking for a man who apparently stole an outgoing letter containing a check for more than $50,000 and deposited it into a Well Fargo bank account under a fake name, according the Stafford County Sheriff's Office. The man being sought is pictured in the two above surveillance photos.

On Feb. 6, an electrical company based in Stafford wrote a business check to the Briggs and Stratton Corporation for $53,242. It was payment for equipment. The check was placed into an envelope, properly addressed and put into the electrical company's mailbox for delivery.

But on Feb. 14, the person in the photos deposited the check into the Columbia Mall (Md.) branch of Well Fargo into the fraudulent account. He subsequently withdrew money from the account. Anyone with information is urged to call Det. Christine Hammond at 540-658-4739.
