Tax Flub With City and Spotsy Again

Fredericksburg will have to refund Stafford and Spotsylvania counties almost $200,000 for a taxing error involving the wholesale VRE gas tax.

Spotsylvania County government will be getting a hefty check again from the City of Fredericksburg after another taxing mishap.

Here are details about the most-recent tax error that involves the wholesale gasoline tax that the city, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties all have as members of the Virginia Railway Express. A total of $176,957 will be distributed to both Spotsylvania and Stafford counties because of the mistake.

This is not the first time that there has been a tax error that has impacted Spotsylvania County. In 2009, the city received a whopping $400,000 of Spotsylvania sales tax money because businesses were not coding the tax forms properly. The error was not the city's fault.

The problem resulted in Spotsylvania County supervisors going through a six-month-long process with the Post Office to change the Zip Code addresses in the county to something else other than "Fredericksburg." When a group of county residents protested the proposed changes, and supervisors realized how much work and trouble they'd have to go through to make the changes, the idea was dropped.
