Teen Charged With Murder in Shooting

Charges may change as investigation continues, says Sheriff Roger Harris. Initial findings had suggested boy was defending his mother.

SPOTSYLVANIA, VA — A teen accused of shooting his mother's boyfriend has been charged with murder in the case.

The 15-year-old faces a 2nd degree murder charge, according to Spotsylvania County Sheriff Roger Harris, who noted the investigation is still in the early stages.

“A myriad of evidentiary items, statements, interviews and further investigative assignments are underway," he said.

Deputies found the body of John Conroy Jr., 37, on Tuesday afternoon in a home in the 5300 block of Towles Mill Road. Conroy had been shot several times.

Investigators said Tuesday night that it appeared Conroy was in an argument with the teen's mother. When the fight got physical, the boy allegedly grabbed a gun in the room and fired it several times.

The Sheriff's Office notes that all homicides are presumed to be 2nd Degree Murders at the onset of a case. The charge may be raised, lowered or dismissed as the investigation continues.
