VIRGINIA — Haunted houses around the neighborhood are great Halloween fun for impressionable children, but Virginians seeking an authentic scare might want to check out Bacon’s Castle in Surry.
That’s according to Thrillist, a travel and entertainment media outlet that recently released its list of the 50 (one for each state) most haunted, scariest places in America.
A handful of other media outlets have also compiled a list of creepy, haunted places in Virginia, showing there’s no shortage of places to get the daylights scared out of you.

Of Bacon’s Castle, the Thrillist editors said:
“If it’s a haunted house you’re after, Bacon’s Castle is it. People have reported encountering disembodied voices and wails, floating heads, books flying off shelves, rockers rockin’ on their own and unwanted visitors being pushed around.”

According to Preservation Virginia, Bacon’s Castle is the oldest brick dwelling in North America and was built for Arthur Allen and his family in 1665. The site covers four centuries of history in Virginia, including experiences of enslaved and free Africans and African Americans who lived, labored and sought freedom at the site.
Interior tours are available through December, and the castle also offers special “haunted” tours for those looking for a spooky thrill.
Meanwhile, Business Insider says the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery in Lexington is the most haunted place in Virginia.
This cemetery is named after Stonewall Jackson, the Confederate general who is buried on the site. According to the official Visit Virginia website, the cemetery is said to be haunted by Jackson and other soldiers from the Civil War.
HGTV recommends checking out the Peyton Randolph House in Williamsburg, which the network claims is the creepiest place in Virginia.
“Built in 1715 and restored in the 1900s, the Peyton Randolph House is one of the oldest homes in Williamsburg — and one of the most haunted. It’s said that a slave named Eve cursed the house in retribution for cruel treatment,” HGTV wrote. “Over the years, visitors have reported hearing strange voices, seeing objects move on their own and being touched or pushed.”
Finally, Forbes believes The Ferry Plantation House in Virginia Beach is the most haunted place in the state. Now a museum, the plantation offers frequent tours and has a well-documented history of paranormal activity.
“The house is also said to be haunted by a number of ghosts, with visitors reporting a myriad of paranormal encounters,” Forbes wrote.
