Triple Homicide Suspect From Spotsylvania Caught By NY State Police

SPOTSYLVANIA, VA — A 23-year-old woman wanted for second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of her three Spotsylvania roommates was arrested Thursday night by New York State Police.

Around 5:45 p.m., troopers spotted a gray 2009 Honda Civic traveling on I-86 in Steuben County, New York. The vehicle matched the description of a car that Alyssa Jane Venable was reported to be driving. A traffic stop was attempted, but the driver refused to pull over. A high-speed pursuit ensued, in which the vehicles reached speeds of 100 mph.

During the chase, troopers used a tire deflation device, which caused the Honda to crash, according to the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office. Venable was arrested and taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

After New York State Police obtain a fugitive warrant for Venable, she will be extradited back to Virginia. The U.S. Marshal's Office provided assistance in Venable's arrest.

On Thursday night, Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office released the identity of the three victims in the case:

  • Robert John McGuire, 77, of Spotsylvania. County
  • Gregory Scott Powell, 60, of Spotsylvania County
  • Carol Anne Reese, 65, of Spotsylvania County

Sheriff's deputies responded around 10 p.m. on Tuesday for a welfare check at a residence in the 10500 block of White Street Court. After entering the residence, the deputies found two men and one woman deceased and exhibiting upper body trauma.

After a preliminary investigation, deputies identified Venable as a suspect in the case. She was the roommate of McGuire, Powell and Reese.

When Venable is returned to Spotsylvania, she will be charged on three counts of second-degree murder and using a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to SCSO.
