UMW Sports Victorious on Saturday
It's a winning Saturday for UMW with Men's Soccer, Field Hockey and Volleyball all capturing victories.

UMW Field Hockey Tops #5 Lebanon Valley, 5-2
The University of Mary Washington field hockey team scored four goals in the final seven minutes of the first half, defeating their second straight nationally ranked opponent to start the season, topping #5 Lebanon Valley College, 5-2, on Saturday in Fredericksburg. The Eagles improve to 3-12 all-time against the Flying Dutchmen.
Lebanon Valley opened the scoring on a goal by Jocelyn Novak 8:33 into the game. The Eagles tied the score at one with 15 minutes remaining on an unassisted score from junior Lisa Charney. Six minutes later, the Eagles took the lead for good, as Morgan Jones scored on an assist from Florence George. Sophomore Caitlin Baker scored the eventual game winner with 4:45 left in the half, and Brenna Hill scored on a Charney assist with 1:09 to play. George scored as time expired on a penalty corner assisted by Charney.
LVC scored the lone goal in the second half, but UMW had enough for just its third win ever over the Flying Dutchmen. The Eagles led in shots, 24-18, and had six corners to 10 for Lebanon Valley. Junior Claire Gianelle had nine saves for the Eagles, while LVC saw Christine Poletti have 13 saves.
The Eagles will host Bridgewater College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
UMW Volleyball Wins EMU Hampton Inn/Sleep Inn Invite; Improves to 4-0
Junior hitter Laura Gomez scored 10 kills on 17 attempts, and junior hitter Karissa Herrick added eight kills to lead the University of Mary Washington volleyball team to a 3-0 victory at Eastern Mennonite University in their first Saturday match at the Hampton Inn/Sleep Inn Invitational. Set scores were 25-18, 25-22, 25-17.
Gomez scored 10 kills with just one error for a .529 hitting average, while Herrick had just two errors for a .316 mark. Sophomore Sammy Hogue had 27 assists and seven digs for UMW, while Herrick had four block assists and sophomore Kaitlynn Wickersham added three total blocks.
The Eagles then defeated Salem College, 25-17, 25-17, 25-13. Kayla Crawford (Richmond, Va., Powhatan) had nine kills, Gomez and Wickersham each added eight kills, and Sammy Hogue and Katie Shiflett combined for 33 assists for UMW.
The Eagles will play the first-ever game in the William M. Anderson Center on Wednesday, hosting Capital Athletic Conference foe Marymount University at 7:00 p.m.

UMW Defeats Greensboro College 3-1 in Kilby's Coaching Debut
Freshman forward Nick Shepherd scored a pair of second half goals to propel the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Greensboro College on Saturday at the Battleground in the first game for new head coach Jason Kilby. The Eagles improve to 1-0 on the season.
The Eagles jumped ahead early, as sophomore Tommy Sangbouasy scored unassisted at 8:10. The score remained tied through halftime, and Greensboro found a tying score at 60:43 from Stenson Croom on a throw in from Logan Paussa. But the Eagles jumped back ahead in just over one minute, as Shepherd headed in an Omar Ismail pass on a freee kick. Shepherd added an insurance goal on another set piece, as he headed in a Patch Owen corner kick at 74:26.
The Eagles led in shots, 14-10, and had five corner kicks to three for the Pride. UMW sophomore goalkeeper Blake Weiss had one save, while Greensboro's Woody Wilder made six stops.
Mary Washington will host Bridgewater College on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the final game of the UMW Soccer Classic.
