UMW Volleyball Opens Anderson Center Era with 3-0 Sweep of Marymount

President Hurley, others attend new facility's first NCAA event.

UMW's newly-dedicated Anderson Center was built with the goal of increasing school spirit and helping to take varsity intercollegiate athletics to the next level. It's only fitting therefore, that the arena's first NCAA athletic contest, Wednesday's volleyball match with Marymount University, resulted in a resounding victory for the Eagles.

The Eagles delivered an inspired performance, sweeping Marymount three games to none (25-15, 25-21, 25-14).

The estimated crowd of 400 included UMW president-elect Rick Hurley and other prominent university leaders. At times, four hundred sounded a lot more like a thousand, as voracious cheers rocked the stands with each won point or diving dig.

On the court, UMW was led by junior Laura Gomez, whose nine kills were a team high. Defense was also at a premium, as sophomore Emily Shea salvaged 12 digs.

"It feels absolutely fantastic," remarked UMW head coach Dee Conway after the match.

"These kids have worked really hard. They're excited about the new facility. We wanted to put on a show for the department as well as the entire school. So, we're excited that we did that, and the fact that we got a win is icing on the cake for us."

With the win, UMW moves to 5-0 on the season and will host Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday, September 13th at 7:00 p.m.
