UMW Women Impress in 2-0 Win Over Methodist
Eagles mount offensive pressure early and often as they move to 3-0 on the season.

Looking to extend its perfect start to the season, the University of Mary Washington Women’s soccer team hosted Methodist University Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. With a complete 90-minute effort, the Eagles secured a 2-0 victory in front of a fired-up student cheering section.
“We've got our game plan, we’ve got our style of play,” said UMW coach Corey Hewson after the game. “The girls are buying into it more and more each week, and it just keeps getting better.”
UMW came out of the gates rearing like a thoroughbred. The Eagles pelted Methodist Goalkeeper Sarah Altman with 9 shots in the first 15 minutes and a total of 14 shots over the first half. Despite the constant offensive pressure, UMW only came away with one goal. In the 13th minute, Kelsey Carter buried home a header off an assist from sophomore forward Erin Reynolds.

The Eagles continued the offensive assault in the second half. In the 65th minute, Excy Herrera one-touched a cross from the right side and fired a left-footed bender into the back of the net.
“Excy, you know she’s very cool under pressure,” remarked Hewson about Herrera. “I think a lot of girls would have struggled with being composed and would’ve taken two touches but she just lobs it away. That’s innate ability right there.”

Mary Washington’s defense, when called upon, was excellent. In the 85th minute, defender Ashley Stevens cleared the ball just inches before it crossed the goal line.
With the victory, UMW continues its perfect start to the season and will look for 4-0 tomorrow, when it hosts Alvernia College at 2 p.m.
