VA Assisted Living Center Seeks Approval To Reopen Kitchen Following Fire

An assisted living center in Fredericksburg contacted health officials recently, seeking approval to reopen its kitchen after a small fire.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Environmental Health Services informed Fredericksburg Assisted Living in Fredericksburg that its kitchen had been approved for operation following a small cooking fire that occurred there at the end of December, authorities say.

On Dec. 31, the person in charge at the Fredericksburg Assisted Living at 3902 Plank Road contacted health officials to report that a pot filled with water on the center's kitchen stove had boiled over, causing a small fire. A fire extinguisher was used to put out the fire.

"The person in charge stated the fire department directed her to get approval from the health department prior to starting operations in the kitchen," according to a Jan. 2 inspection report. "The person in charge stated everything has been cleaned inside the kitchen where the extinguisher was used over the small area."

"EHS staff provided a backflow prevention device handout and spoke with the operator about obtaining a back flow prevention device fitted for continuous pressure in order to keep hose and spray nozzle attachment attached to mop sink," according to the inspection report.

During a followup visit, the operator provided a CFPM certificate to the inspector. In addition, gaskets had been replaced on the reach-in coolers, and a hand sink in men's toliet room was re-caulked. The restaurant was then cleared for operation.

Rappahannock Area Health District inspectors found health code violations at 10 of the 30 Fredericksburg food establishments they visited Jan. 2-9.
